U.S. Bans Imports of Canadian Dairy Products

President Trump signed proclamations Tuesday banning imports of certain products from Canada and modifying the Section 338 tariffs on Canadian products that took effect last month “to address Canada’s increased discrimination against U.S. commerce,” according to the White House.

Under Section 338 of the Tariff Act, the president can impose import tariffs of up to 50% to offset the burden to U.S. commerce from a country’s discrimination against U.S. exports.

On July 20, 2026, in response to Canada’s “discriminatory treatment” of dairy, alcohol and cars, Trump announced proclamations imposing additional 50% ad valorem duties on selected Canadian imports, which went into effect on Aug. 22 after trade negotiations broke down.
