Texas AG Initiates Packer Investigation

Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into the beef industry over potential anticompetitive conduct among the nation’s largest meatpackers. Paxton said he will work alongside the U.S. Department of Justice, which is also conducting civil and criminal antitrust investigations into beef packers, to protect the nation's beef supply chain.

The meat packing industry is highly concentrated, with the nation’s four largest meat packers – JBS, Cargill, Tyson Foods and National Beef – handling 85% of all cattle purchases now compared with 36% in 1980, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
