‘Tis the season for seed sales. It’s time to sit down and look at hybrids, yield results and early season discounts. You want to make the best decision when seed sales folks pull into the farm, since it will affect next year’s profitability.
University of Illinois Variety Testing Program data shows that yields can vary 30 to 50 bushels per acre in corn and 10 to 20 bushels per acre in soybeans, based on the hybrid farmers plant and how it reacts to field conditions.
Giovani Preza Fontes, University of Illinois Extension agronomist, said farmers should look for varieties that perform well in various locations and for multiple years in their area.
