Collectively, farmers across Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana are expected to plant nearly 30 million acres of corn this season, according to the 2026 Prospective Plantings report. May is a critical window for crops to get planted and established.

To understand the month’s impacts on this year’s corn crop, we asked Successful Farming® Crop Crew agronomists across the “I” states to describe May in a single word, reflecting on the crop’s progress, condition, and challenges across their territories.

“Variability” resonated with three agronomists to describe May’s impact on the corn crop in their regions.

Iowa agronomist Eric Wilson said emergence, rainfall, temperatures, and corn stands have been variable for the month of May across his Wyffels Hybrids territory.

“Planting spanned late April into most of May and as of right now corn development and stand counts are variable,” said Wilson. “This is not to say they are poor; there is just more variability in eastern Iowa compared to the most recent three years.”
